Qualcomm Launches a New Chip for Children’s Smart Watches

Previously, Qualcomm has introduced a new smartwatch processor and Android smartwatches which have very much stalled to a large extent, although because of it not certainly very much exclusively. Now, that is going to change this year as the Qualcomm introduces at least two new smartwatch chips. Recently, the first smartwatch is already announced a few days before. However, it is not the general-purpose chip we all have been waiting for; instead, it has meant especially for the kids’ watches.

While the new chip, the Snapdragon Wear 2500, is only designed for Qualcomm saw as a rising market of smartwatches built around the needs of the kids. Pankaj Kedia, who leads wearables at Qualcomm, said that these watches are only meant to give all the kids, ability to keep learning and to connect with the gadgets when they are not in-house and might find themselves in school, sometimes where they are not always near a computer.

Pankaj Kedia said in a phone interview that it is like you grew up on Alexa and you also want to take Alexa always with you, if you want to ask Alexa that what’s the capital of the US’ or who is the 35th president of the US, or if you want to learn some different languages. And also the voice assistants who are making it easy for you to do that. Literally, some of the kids in that bracket are always using kid watches only for the learning purposes.

However, the Wear 2500 chip is almost around a third smaller than prior Wear chips, and it is supposed to provide slightly improved battery life. The chip supports LTE, up to a 5-megapixel camera, the location tracking, and also plenty of other sensors.

Since it is intended for kids, it sounds as though it will always be a less powerful platform than whatever Wear chip and the Qualcomm is planning next, but Pankaj Kedia would not simplify that point or even why 2500 couldn’t be used to make the general-purpose watches. He said, “I have a Tesla and a Porsche.” Both take them from point A to point B, but they were designed for some different use cases.

There is also one other interesting peculiarity in the Wear 2500 chip that it is not designed to support the Wear OS or the Google’s smartwatch platform. Instead, it was only meant to be paired with a custom version of the Android that Qualcomm has built for the kids’ watches. It is called as Android for Kids, and it also sounds like it even won’t support any notifications or any of the app store; instead of that, some manufacturers will preload it with the games and apps that they think that kids and parents will want it.

Now, the Qualcomm has started providing the Wear 2500 to the hardware partners and expects watches by using it to start coming out might be later this year. And Huawei will be among the first partners.

Pankaj Kedia did not have an update on when the Qualcomm’s next general-purpose smartwatch chip which is meant for the Wear OS watches that would arrive. But he said that both adult and kids watch segments are big today and also getting bigger and that the Qualcomm intended to lead in both. Pankaj Kedia said that Winning is always a bigger fun. Qualcomm is winning, and we are also winning because we both are investing together.
