Commonwealth Bank Sends Data Of 10,000 Customers To The Wrong Email Address

Data breaches and privacy concerns are growing day by day. Financial corporations such as banks ought to be more vigilant and careful with the customer data. Banks are one of the riskiest places if you consider privacy. A considerable amount of data gets lost, stolen, and compromised these days. Privacy violations done by banks should be taken seriously and punished appropriately. Recently, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia has come in the spotlight for mishandling customer data.

The staff at Commonwealth Bank, erroneously sent emails which had the data of a whopping 10,000 customers to a company located abroad, as they failed to add “.au” at the end of the domain name “cba.com.”

On Friday, this leading bank stated that it conducted an information security investigation. In the investigation, it was revealed that the previous financial year staff had inadvertently sent around 651 internal emails to email addresses with the wrong domain name. The actual domain name of the bank was cba.com.au whereas the team mailed it to cba.com.

Commonwealth bank tried to assure the public that the customer data has not been compromised because of these emails which were sent by mistake. However, the bank stated that they would contact every customer whose information was included in the emails.

From April 2016, around 651 emails which contained data of over 10,000 customers were sent to the wrong address. Even though the bank has owned cba.com since April 2017, this domain name was owned by a financial services firm in the US named Cheslock Bakker & Associates. After that, it was owned by a US-based cyber security company.  At the beginning of January 2017, CWS bank blocked internal emails which were sent to cba.com email addresses.

From January 2017, the bank had been blocking internal emails which were sent to the domain name cba.com. From April 2017, the bank took the ownership of the domain name cba.com. Hence, now all mains which were sent to cba.com will get returned as undeliverable.

Advice to Customers
No evidence that customer data has been compromised has been found. Therefore, the bank advises the customers not to take any action. The investigation done by the bank confirmed that all the wrongly sent internal emails and related customer data had not been used and it has been deleted permanently. The 651 emails which were sent did not contain customer passcodes or PIN codes.

The bank guaranteed that the funds of the customers are secure and they are protected from any unauthorized transactions.
